2010 Stand Alone Prescription Drug Plans

You've probably heard about Medicare's prescription drug coverage, sometimes called Medicare Part D. Part D works differently than Medicare Part A and Part B. To get Part D, you choose a Medicare prescription drug plan from a private company, like BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.

The federal government helps pay for Part D. To get this coverage, you must join a Medicare prescription drug plan or a Medicare Advantage plan with drug coverage. Like other types of insurance, there is a monthly premium that varies depending on the type of plan you choose. You then pay a share of the cost of your prescriptions.

Anyone who is entitled to Medicare Part A or enrolled in Medicare Part B and who lives in South Carolina is eligible to join a plan, regardless of income and resources, pre-existing conditions or current prescription drug expenses.

Extra Help for People Who Need It

People with limited incomes may qualify for extra help to pay for their prescription drug costs. If eligible, Medicare could pay for 75 percent of drug costs including monthly prescription drug premiums, annual deductibles and coinsurance. Also, those who qualify will not be subject to the coverage gap or a late enrollment penalty. Many people are eligble for these savings and don't even know it. To see if you qualify for extra help, call:
